Search Engine Optimization Tips for Higher Rankings
Depending on who you talk to, Search Engine Optimization is a simple process and anyone can do it. Those of us who specialize in SEO work every day know differently and can attest that Search Engine Optimization is overwhelming to most people. Every day I talk to people who have been on the internet for years with an eye pleasing web site with all the fancy features, however, their main complaint is always the same. They can't find their site on the web regardless of what search term they use. There's a simple reason for this and that is their web site has never been optimized correctly by someone who knows what they are doing.
The other day while I was searching for keywords on one of my promotion campaigns for a client, I came across an article stating how simple it was to gain page one ranking on Google. When doing a search for his site I found him on page 10 of Google. It doesn't take the village idiot to figure out that this person didn't know what the heck he was talking about. If his system worked so well wouldn't it make sense he should be on page one of the search engines. Talk is cheap and ineffective; however, successful actions are verifiable by obtaining good search engine rankings.
Optimization of your web site is critical for you to obtain "Top Positions on Google" or any other search engine. There are suggestions, guidelines and practices that are common in every well ranked site with every search engine. Good page rankings with the engines don't just happen, there is a process that you must learn, follow daily and consistently tweak your site if you want to stay ahead of your competition. This whole process is not about just being a computer whiz, in fact you don't have to know anything about the workings of a computer, however, you do have to understand how search engine optimization works in your everyday marketing activities.
You must have the ability to be able to write good content for your site and be able to edit your content if changes need to be made in your web site. This requires that you have some knowledge of FTP (file transfer protocol) to make change in the content and then upload your changes to the server. There are many different free FTP programs available by doing a Google Search. This is one of the free services that I use all the time and find the learning curve is rather easy even for beginners. Take a close look at the FileZilla opportunity with is often referred to as the free FTP solution.
There are all kinds of information regarding how to build web sites, promote and marketing in general that you can find online. Many of these offerings are nothing more than someone who is trying to hype one aspect of marketing in general and making big money for their efforts from those who don't know any better. The other way to accomplish some good results is to find a reputable Optimization Specialist who can cut to the chase quickly and advise what you need to do to become successful in your particular niche market. Seek the advice of the professionals before you waste a lot of money on programs that have no value with regard to your opportunity and goals.
There are certain features of your web site that all search engines requires for rankings. The first is the title of your site. The title should include 3-5 unique keywords about your business opportunity. You should have no less than 40 characters and no more than 60 characters in your title. By keeping the title of your site within these guidelines you should meet the algorithms of most search engines.
The second important thing in your source code should be the Meta tag description. This is what most search engines will show when a search query is made on one of your keywords and shows your site as a site that matches the search term. The total character count should be no less than 120 characters and no more than 150 characters to be accepted by most engines. Some engines will accept more characters than others; however, those engines that only accept 150 would cut off the remaining character which may include the most important part of your Meta description. Make sure your Meta tag description includes the same keywords that was used in the title of your web site.
You must have relevant keywords and keywords phrases in your source code as well. Depending on who you talk to there are varied opinions regarding the number of characters that are acceptable in this part of your source code. Some say between 400-500 characters is right, while others say you can go up to 1,000 characters. Let me make a suggestion here that hopefully will make a lot of sense. Let's say that you have 5 or 6 prime keywords or keyword phrases that you want to promote and everything else was not important to your marketing campaign then why fill your keyword section with a lot of junk. You can laser focus your efforts on the 5-6 keywords rather than diluting those powerful keywords with words that have little to no value to your overall marketing efforts.
Keyword research is really important here, so take whatever time it takes to get exactly the right keywords and phrases that apply to your business opportunity. Your page content is another important ingredient of optimizing your web site. These are the words that the general public will see when they visit your site. You will often hear this part of your site referred to as the body. Here again you must repeat the same unique keywords that you used in the title and Meta tag description of your source code. Many experts in search engine optimization will use the same text that they used in the Meta tag description in the opening paragraph of their body content. Making your keywords bold in the body of your web site will also be a plus for the engines as well as the readers. Be careful and not overdo this part of the process because you will dilute the importance of the ranking process.
Once you have your site to where you're comfortable with all the optimization elements, then it's a good idea to submit your pages to some kind of a Web Page Analyzer. This will help you understand exactly what the search engines are looking for and what changes you may want to make to be more optimized before you publish your site up to the internet. In this analysis you will see if your site is acceptable concerning keyword frequency, density and prominence. In this analysis you will see other important areas that can make the difference between good rankings or no ranking at all with the engines. You do not need high keyword density to rank high with the search engines.
The features discussed here today are used by all search engines so following this simple process you should do well.
There are numerous other elements that the search engines uses for ranking purposes which are too numerous to include in this article. Review some of my other articles regarding SEM/SEO Marketing covering some additional critical elements of optimization.
