Understanding the purpose and functions of the Search Engines is one of the first things anyone who is just starting to market online must study and understand just how the search engines actually work. One of the latest reports I saw recently stated that some of these databases are as large a 2.1 trillion web pages that they select from. The information you receive when you do a query for a specific search term may end up showing as much as a million results or more for your search term.

The goal of every successful marketer is to reach a page one ranking with Google, Yahoo, Bing and other fine search engines because the search engines will direct traffic to your opportunity especially if you are number one thru third position on the search results. Optimizing your site for the search engines is critical if you ever hope to acquire "Top Positions on Google, Yahoo, Bing" and other highly regarded search engines.

The question is often ask "why do I need to be on page one of the search engines?" Let's consider for a moment just how far you personally look when you are looking for a specific search term. There are many online users who will not go past page one for results on any search term. Rarely will you find someone who will go past page three in their search for information. About the only time I will go past the first or second page is if I'm doing some extensive technical research on a particular subject.

I've noticed in recent months there's been a massive merging of search engines forming huge search engine conglomerates that share the same databases and provide the best search results in an effort to save money and be competitive with the top three engines.

Most search engines now offer some form of sponsored results which is paid ads and this is how they make money by providing paid advertisement which is often referred to as pay-per-click advertising. Naturally the more popular the search term you've selected the more you will have to pay for that listing.
