The Importance Of Understanding Search Engine Functions
Understanding the purpose and functions of the Search Engines is one of the first things anyone who is just starting to market online must study and understand just how the search engines actually work. If you take the time and learn the basic principles of the search engines and how they function you will be able to appreciate the benefits for the rest of your online career. Today we want to talk about some of the relationships between one search engine and other search engines since most people assume that the search engines are competing against each other.
Once you understand how the various search engines work and meld together their data when indexing your site will help you comprehend the whole structure of this process. Understanding the process is one of the advantages that a SEO Consultant has over the normal marketer. Knowledge is important when marketing online and the more you know the easier it is to promote your business opportunity to the internet masses. To put it simply, you need to study and understand how the results of one search engine may influence rankings in other search engines as well.
In your research you will find that the term "SE" is used frequently as an abbreviation for "Search Engine(s)." By using the SE's effectively you will learn that search engines and optimization for the engines is one of the most powerful methods used by successful marketers to target potential customers and help them find you online when a user is searching for important information about their particular interest on the internet.
Statistics show that there are 400 million +/- searches on the internet each and every day. To be found in such a maze of information you must do one very important chore each and every day of you marketing career, and that is to study and learn all you can about anything to do with promoting online. To build a site and be found in the search results for a search query mentioned above you must strategically place relevant keywords in your web site, whether it's a product or service site really doesn't matter.
You probably already know that just about anything you want to research or find can be done by simply typing in a brief phrase including keywords in the search bar of any of the search engines. If you include 2-5 keywords regarding your search the search engines will then match those keywords to the information in their data base and show you in the search results the most nearly match sites to your query. These results will appear with the most relevant sites at the top of the page to lesser relevant web sites as you go down the page of the search results.
Think of the internet as your own personal library on virtually any subject you can think of regarding information on products, services or research projects. There are numerous search engines that may use the same massive database and pay an engine like Google, Yahoo or Bing for using the information in their database. One of the latest reports I saw recently stated that some of these databases are as large a 2.1 trillion web pages that they select from. The information you receive when you do a query for a specific search term may end up showing as much as a million results or more for your search term.
The goal of every successful marketer is to reach a page one ranking with Google, Yahoo, Bing and other fine search engines because the search engines will direct traffic to your opportunity especially if you are number one thru third position on the search results. Optimizing your site for the search engines is critical if you ever hope to acquire "Top Positions on Google, Yahoo, Bing" and other highly regarded search engines.
The question is often ask "why do I need to be on page one of the search engines?" Let's consider for a moment just how far you personally look when you are looking for a specific search term. There are many online users who will not go past page one for results on any search term. Rarely will you find someone who will go past page three in their search for information. About the only time I will go past the first or second page is if I'm doing some extensive technical research on a particular subject.
I've noticed in recent months there's been a massive merging of search engines forming huge search engine conglomerates that share the same databases and provide the best search results in an effort to save money and be competitive with the top three engines.
Most search engines now offer some form of sponsored results which is paid ads and this is how they make money by providing paid advertisement which is often referred to as pay-per-click advertising. Naturally the more popular the search term you've selected the more you will have to pay for that listing. You can refer to our recent article for more detailed information regarding the pay-per-click concept and how it can benefit your marketing efforts.
This has been a brief description of how the search engines work and if you understand how they work, you can make your marketing efforts more effective and profitable, now and in the future. The more you study and learn about how the search engines function the quicker you will see good results and start making money online.
