Using the Right Keyword Phrases for SEO-SEM Marketing

The question is often asked "why are keywords so important to Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing?" Very simply; keywords are the words users enter in the search bar of their favorite search engine when they want to find information regarding a particular product or service they may be interested in.

When building and optimizing a web site one should think hard about what keywords or phrases that the consumer would most likely use to find your business opportunity. Then do some research with some form of a keyword generator to see how many times per month that keyword is searched for. There's really no point in optimizing your web site for keywords or phrases that no one searches for. For a successful marketing campaign of any kind it's imperative that you target the right keywords.

The keywords you finally choose to optimize must be relevant to what your web site is all about and match the keywords in the content area of your site. If you choose the wrong keywords or phrases, all your promotional efforts will be of absolutely no value and will cost you a lot of wasted time and money. By using the wrong keywords you could be sanctioned by the search engines in any number of different ways.

It was recently stated that there are three types of keywords used, when a user is searching for information online. There are keywords used for browsing, keywords from comparing and keywords for buying. To expound on these elements a bit further, the keywords used for comparing are usually keywords that work best for search engine optimization. The end result of using the right keywords will get you higher rankings with the search engine, generate more customers to your web site and as a result will develop into more sales.

Don't use single words to promote because a single word is not very effective and hard to optimize or promote. Most users will opt for two or three word phrases in their searching for results on any subject term. Sometimes even a four word search may be the correct combination. One major research organization recently stated "Internet users who use four word searches are more likely to purchase goods or services than those using fewer words." Take some time and experiment for yourself on some of these basic ideas.

We mentioned earlier about using the wrong keywords and what may happen. As you can see by now the importance of researching for the right keywords before you ever try to optimize your web site is critical. My recommendation is to compile a list of around 35 to 40 keywords and then narrow your search down to maybe 8 or 10 keywords that fit with your theme content. Using a limited amount of targeted keyword is so much more powerful than selecting 100 keywords that are not relevant to your web site content. There's no point in promoting keywords that aren't relevant to the project you’re attempting to promote. The same thing applies to keywords that have no chance of converting to a sale.

This brings us to the important issue of why it's so important to optimize your web site for the benefit of the search engines. This lets the search engines know exactly which keywords or phrases that you want to be found by the internet users. When you see a web site with a high page ranking with the search engines you can rest assured that the site has been optimized with relevant keywords and quality incoming links pointing to that site. In the optimization process make sure that your source code is optimized correctly and conforms to the W3 Consortium guidelines as well as the algorithms of the top 3 search engines.

There's been a lot of controversy regarding the importance of the number of pages in your web site. It has been recommended you should have at least six pages minimum for effective engine indexing. Promoting a single page site to a high search engine ranking is so much more difficult than promoting multiple pages. The search engines will index your entire site and make their rankings accordingly. It's more practical to get ranked on a six page site with about 200 words per page with a couple of relevant keywords on each page, when compared to a one page site with a total of 12 keywords and 1,200 words in the content.

Make sure that your web pages are appealing to the online user as well as being optimized for the search engines. In your optimization process make sure your site has its own domain name, that you use a fast hosting company and a reliable server. Avoid spam elements such as hidden text, cloaking or any other shady tactics on any web site before you publish. The search engines are very quick to sanction any type of questionable content or shady tactics.
