What the Search Engines Look For When Ranking a Web Site

The algorithms that the search engines use in their ranking process is always kept under tight security from most of the company employees. The entities of total optimization are also kept highly secretive to the general public as well. However, there are some basic ideas we want to share in today's article regarding how search engines actually look at a web site.

Anyone who's in business must learn early on that what the user see's in a site is totally different than what the search engine spiders see when the engines send their robots to index a web page. When your optimization specialist learns and understands the overall concept of optimization, and implements those critical elements into your web site, then you will see some remarkable results with your site rankings.

Keep in mind that the search engines don't rank sites; they rank pages of a site. A helpful hint here would be, don't try to optimize all of your keywords on your home page. Promote 1 or 2 of your main keywords on any one page of your site. You can take each one of your keywords or phrases and feature them on their own page if you choose. Normally the engines like to see a minimum of 5-6 pages in a web site with about 500 total words on each page with a 5-7% keyword to content ratio.

It's advisable to use your main keyword in your domain name if possible; however, not putting your keywords in the URL doesn't create a problem with the engines. Try to use your main keyword in the URL of some of the other pages of your site. This is how you will earn acceptable relevance by the search engines for each of the individual keywords. All search engines will show your URLs of specific keyword rich pages on your site, not just the root domain name.

Keep in mind that when you use graphics, images and JavaScript for the purpose of generating eye appeal for the reading audience it is totally different than what the search engines will see. The search engines robots do not see graphics, images and JavaScript. Make sure you include alt attributes for all images. The search engines are now requiring alt tags and must be included in every site. Limit your alt descriptions to about 4-5 relevant descriptive words.

Just because you have a huge web site doesn't mean that you will gain any higher ranking with the search engines. GoogleBot will read no more than 100KB on a page regardless of whether you have included keywords and keyword phrases at the bottom of your pages. Simply put, if your total content is deemed above the limits, your remaining content will be invisible to the search engine spiders and thus the remaining part of your content and keywords will not be found when a user searches for a specific query for the keywords that was not indexed.

This leads us to a very important issue regarding overloading the header section of your website with scripts, images or different styles of fonts and sizes. At the most, use no more than three different sizes of fonts and styles in your site. Over usage of these mentioned aspects of your site will push your rankings further down the search results page. It has been said that "most search engines will leave the site if there's no content before the fold." So make sure you place your content as near the top of your site as possible.

It's critical to have important keywords near to the beginning of the page for maximum effectiveness. This is one of the relevancy indicators that the engines consider. It has been said that "many readers will read the content first before looking for items in a menu." Try to put your menu on the right hand side of your site instead of the normal left hand pane. The spiders as well as the readers will read from left to right. In the source code, if your content is immediately under your header you will find that the engines will give you more credence for properly constructing your site to meet their algorithms. You want your main content to be one of the first things the spider sees after indexing your header.

When the spiders visit your web site for the first time, they are searching for relevant keywords and phrases being used. By reading your HTML, the engines should be able to guess what your site is all about. Always have your site fully optimized before you begin any promotional campaigns. If you're not familiar with this whole process, then seek the help of an Optimization Specialist as soon as possible. Your visit with a professional who understands this concept of optimization will save you an incredible amount of time, effort and money.

No one individual totally understands all the various indices the search engines use to rank your site. We do know that the keyword prominence, density, proximity and frequency are important in the ranking process of a web page. See yesterdays article for additional details regarding the elements for earning "Top Positions on Google, Yahoo, Bing" and other fine search engines.

In Summary:

It's important that we make every web page pleasing to the reading audience. It must be attractive, informative and easy to understand. With regards to the search engines, they see your site as equally important, and must meet the guidelines and algorithms of the various engines. No site is complete without a good balance of both user friendly eye appeal as well as search engine compliance.

Remember the engines rank pages, not sites. If you're not familiar on how to put together this combination of events, then seek professional help immediately.
