Building a Site that Appeals to Search Engines and Users

Designing a web site is a process that requires a lot of thought, especially if you want your site to get recognized by the search engines. It's one thing to build an attractive, flashy site for the users, but it's a totally different process to design the site for both the search engines and users. Many web designers will build a good looking site with all the bells and whistles, but don't have a clue about what the search engines are looking for. The site must be designed for both the engines and users before anything can happen on the internet.

The search engines look for well written relevant content. The old saying that "Content Is King" is more than just a cute saying; it's a reality with every search engine that can be found on the internet. Structuring a web site to appeal to the user is important, however, meeting the algorithms of the search engines is what it takes to get the engines to funnel targeted potential clients to your web site when the user types in a keyword in the search bar of the engine and views the responses. The site that most nearly meets the keyword search term in Google, Yahoo or Bing data base will get the higher page ranking.

Google stated recently that the search engines are responsible for "97% of consumer searches for local businesses online". The better your site is optimized, the more niche traffic will be funneled your way. I think you're beginning to see the importance of having a well structured site to meet the requirements of search engine and users alike.

A Search Engine Optimization Specialist can help you in the structuring of your site to meet all the required elements of an optimized web site. Making it easy for the spiders to determine your navigation paths, content and headings are some of the basic elements that must be adhered to before your site will have any impact with the search engines. If you're tempted to lay out your site in a non conventional way then make sure that you follow the three important elements we mentioned above.

By using heading tags such as (H1, H2 etc.) in your main header tags as well as your sub-headings is vitally important. Different site builder will use different formats in the building process. Many will use some of the older methods by using generic div tags while others insist that using the more modern CSS methods is best. The search engine will recognize either of these methods. Some builder will insist that you should avoid quotes, however, if quotes are necessary to make a point then use the "block quote tags”. This little extra effort will help the robots when they spider your site for information to put in the data bases of the search engines. Using a sitemap can really help the spiders navigate your site and the search engines love this extra effort and will reward you accordingly.

The overuse of keywords in your site will hurt your rankings rather quickly. Many of the search engines will cut off searching for keywords in your source code if there are more than 150 characters in your keyword description area. Other engine will still accept up to 814 characters. The more keywords you try to use, the more it will dilute your main keywords you wany to promote. Make sure your Title, Meta Description and your Meta keywords do not exceed the recommended suggestions.

In the content of your site you should always write your copy just like you normally talk in a natural flow using your keywords in the proper areas of your text and try to limit stuffing a bunch of keywords in only one area of the site. The search engines are really keen on keyword stuffing and will penalize your site severely, even to the point of dropping your site off the internet entirely. It is nearly an act of congress to get the engines to reverse that penalty even though it was done in total ignorance.

There are differences of opinion among site designers and optimization specialist regarding Meta tag descriptions and many say that tags are not important to the search engines anymore. The reason you should use the Meta Description is because that is what the user will probably read when they find your site coming up because of their current inquiry. Writing a compelling Meta description may well be the key of getting a user to click on your site instead of your competition opportunity.

Keep in mind that alt tags are used for a reason. Without an alt tag an image appears to the robots as a black box and will have no meaning to the search engines because they don't see pictures. Most all search engines are now requiring all images to have an alt tag or your site will be penalized.

We mentioned content earlier in this article and mentioned how "Content Is King"and the engines are putting more and more credence on the value of your site especially if your copy really stands out above your competitors.
